Adherents of the Catholic Churches in Benin City on Wednesday joined counterparts globally to observe ash Wednesday which marks the beginning of Lenten season in Orthodox churches inline with their believes.
The messages at the churches centred on the need for Christians to abstain from sin, live a holy life and arms giving in line with the teaches of Jesus Christ.
Auditorium of the churches visited were parked full with believers in Catholic faith who converged to observe the symbolic Ash Wednesday which is also the beginning of Lenten season in Catholics
In their separate homilies, the clergymen who spoke on the significance of ash Wednesday said it is a period where Christians are expected to confess sins and rededicate their lives to God, adding that Christians are to engage in fasting and prayer, abstain from things that gives them pleasure and give a helping hand to the less privileged in the society .
The clergymen also shared more lights on avoidable things during the period of lent, maintaining that unmarried persons are advised not to have sex, unless for couples who built their marriage around God and such persons should understand that the Lenten period is a time for sacrifice and not for enjoyment.
It was gathered that other orthodox churches also observes ash Wednesday.
