The World Health Organisation’s Country Representative to Nigeria, Doctor Wondimagegnehu Alemu, has said Nigeria is to get additional eight hundred and twenty thousand Meningitis C vaccine from the United Kingdom.
He said this in a statement in Abuja today, he said the vaccines, funded by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, have been administered in Zamfara and Katsina states where the disease was most endemic.
Doctor Alemu said an additional eight hundred and twenty thousand doses of the meningitis C conjugate vaccine donated by the UK government to WHO was currently being sent to Nigeria.
He said WHO’s Country Office in Nigeria, including a number of field offices, have been supporting the government since the meningitis outbreak began.
WHO Country Representative also stated that the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, with support from WHO, the US Centre for Disease Control, UNICEF and other partners were leading the response to the on-going outbreak.
He said these Organisations were also carrying out intensified surveillance, capacity building for case management and risk communication.
