Gov. Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom has described the late Prof. Chinua Achebe as a literary icon whose works would outlive many generations.
This is contained in a statement issued in Uyo by the State’s Commissioner for Information, Mr. Aniekan Umanah.
In the statement, Akpabio described the author of Things Fall Apart as a man whose literary exploits brought honour and great respect to Nigeria and Africa.
“The hearts of the sons and daughters of Akwa Ibom go out to the Achebe family, Igbo land and Nigeria as a whole over the irredeemable loss of Achebe.”
Akpabio urged everyone to be consoled that the works of the departed icon won him and the country many laurels and global recognition.
“He wished the departed soul a peaceful repose in the bosom of the Almighty God.”
It will be recalled that Achebe gained global attention when his novel, Thing Fall Apart was published in 1958.
His other novels included No Longer at Ease, Arrow of God, A Man of the People, and Anthills of the Savanna, among many other literary works.
He died in Boston, USA on Friday, March 21, 2013.
