The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, ALGON, has called on the Federal Government to review upward the revenue sharing formula for Local Governments.
ALGON President, Mr. Ozo Okafor made the appeal in Abuja at a Forum of Key Functionaries of Local Governments in Nigeria.
He said paucity of funds has continued to be the major challenge facing sustainable development at the grassroots.
Mr. Okafor also called on the Federal Government to revisit the issue of Local Government autonomy, especially now that constitution review is ongoing.
The ALGON President said an upward review of the revenue formula would increase Local Governments’ funds and transform to increase in development projects at the grassroots.
According to him, the bulk of the nation’s population is in the Local Government, yet there are no enough funds to drive the development at that level.
The ALGON president also renewed the call for local government autonomy to enhance democracy.
He appealed to the Federal Government to revisit the issue of local government autonomy now that there is still room for constitution review, noting that such autonomy will foster democracy and enable the bulk of Nigerians at the grassroots to get the best out of democracy.
