Benin: Medical practitioners protest kidnap of their colleague

Medical activities at the Central hospital, Benin City temporarily suffered a setback today as members of the Medical and Dental Consultant Association of Nigeria, Central hospital branch went on a solemn protest in solidarity with their colleague, Doctor Emmanuel Woghiren, who was kidnapped by gunmen last Saturday.

The doctors who temporarily abandoned their duty post took their protest to the office of the Acting Director of Hospital Services Central Hospital Benin and the Ministry of Health to register their grievances over the kidnap of their colleague, Dr. Emmanuel Woghiren.

The protesting doctors said after five days since their colleague was abducted by unknown persons, there is no sign that he will soon be released, a situation they say is making them uncomfortable.

The Acting Director Hospital Services, Central Hospital Benin, Doctor Ofure Eboreme said it is disheartening that doctors who render selfless services in saving lives can be kidnapped by some individuals in the society.

He however appealed to the conscience of the kidnappers to release Doctor Emmanuel Woghiren unhurt.

At the time of this report, the doctors were on their way to the State Police Command and the office of the State Security Service to also register their complaints.
