Edo State Assembly summons PHCN boss over rural electricity project

The Edo House of Assembly has directed the Managing Director of Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) Benin Zonal Office, Mr Effiong Umoren, to appear before it on May 13.

The Speaker, Uyigue Igbe, said in Benin during a plenary session that Umoren’s appearance was to clarify the electricity project at Ikiran Oke, Ayara and Ikakumo.

Report have it the project is located in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of the state.

He said that the invitation was sequel to the presentation and consideration of the report of the house Standing Committee on Energy and Water Resources.

Igbe emphasized the need for the PHCN boss to appear before the house to explain the where about of N50 million meant for the execution of the project. The speaker commended members of the committee for their contribution.

The Chairman of the committee, Micheal Ohio-Ezeomo, said all attempts by the committee to visit the project site and get necessary document from the PHCN boss were unsuccessful.

In another development, the house has promised to investigate the alleged demolition of a market situated at Isonorhor in New-Benin by the state Ministry of Environment.

This is sequel to a petition brought before the house by members of Traders Welfare Union in Benin on the issue and read on the floor of the house by the speaker.

The traders union alleged that goods valued at more than N200 million were destroyed in the process.

The speaker, therefore, directed the petition to the Standing Committee on Environment to report back its findings within one week.
