Edo State Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs has reacted to the falsehood and sentiment being spread on the circumstance surrounding the suspension of Etsako West Local Government Chairman, Mr. Yakubu Musa.
A statement by the Ministry says at the Joint Account Allocation Committee meeting held on Twenty-eight of May, 2019, Governor Godwin Obaseki frowned at the high wage bill of Etsako West Local Government, which amounted to sixty-six million naira monthly whereas Oredo Local Government that has more staff strength pay fifty-nine million naira monthly.
The statement explains that the Governor directed the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs to carry out a staff audit in Etsako West Local Government.
According to the statement, at the end of the verification exercise, sixty-three staff of Etsako Local Government did not show up for the exercise thereby saving six million naira for the Local Government.
The statement revealed that authorities of Etsako West Local Government entrusted the payroll of the Local Government to a grade level three officer who inserted two fictitious names in the payroll through whom the Local Government defrauded forty-six million Naira from July, 2018 to May, 2019.
It said the case is currently being investigated by security agencies.
The statement pointed out that if the Chairman of Etsako West Local Government was diligent enough, he should have raised alarm that the wage bill of the Local Government was increasing astronomically even though no new staff was employed.
It stated that Governor Obaseki ordered a staff audit verification to uncover the massive fraud that has been festering in Etsako West Local Government.
The statement pointed out that Edo State Government in keeping with its avowed commitment to the rule of law and in accordance with the Local Government Law of Edo State 2000 as amended, decided to suspend the Chairman of Etsako West Local Government, Mr. Yakubu Musa.
