Eighty Percent Recommendation Of Justice Uwais Political Reform Has Been Implemented – Jega

The Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega says about eighty percent of the recommendations of the Justice Lawal Uwais-led Political Reform Panel has been implemented.
Professor Jega disclosed this in his presentation at the National Conference Committee on Political Parties and Electoral Matters.
He expressed the hope that with the committee’s inputs, subsequent amendment would be made to the legislation that may take the Commission to its destination.
The INEC boss added that the commission has achieved financial autonomy by law and in practice because government has complied fully with the law, adding that the financial autonomy granted the commission has given it relative autonomy in terms of how it manages the electoral process.
Professor Jega said the recommendation of the Uwais panel for the establishment of a separate body for the registration of political parties is a good development.
The INEC Chairman said what the commission has identified to be challenging is the prosecution of electoral offenders as it lacks the capacity to successfully prosecute the huge number of electoral offenders.
While saying that Nigeria would not be able to conduct all elections in one day in 2015 because of cost and logistic problems, He noted that the commission has already achieved eighty percent timely delivery of election materials and is working to achieve ninety-five percent as it has customized election result sheets to polling units.
