Federal Judicial Service Commission approves Justice Walter Onnoghen as next Chief Justice of Nigeria

The Federal Judicial Service Commission has approved Justice Walter Nkanu Onnoghen as the next Chief Justice of Nigeria.

Justice Onnoghen, who is presently the most senior Justice of the Supreme Court, was nominated by the judicial body to take over from the current CJN, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, who will step down on November ten, upon attaining the seventy years mandatory retirement age.

The FJSC, last week, forwarded Justice Onnoghen’s name to the National Judicial Council, which will in turn, forward same to President Muhammadu Buhari.

If President Buhari approves Justice Onnoghen from Cross-River State as the seventeenth CJN, he will become the first Southern jurist to head the judiciary in about twenty-nine years.

Justice Onnoghen will clock seventy years on December twenty, 2020.
