It was a bloody Palm Sunday in Egypt as two blasts targeting Coptic Christians killed at least forty two people.
In Alexandria, an explosion outside Saint Mark’s Coptic church killed thirteen people. Pope Tawadros the Second, head of the Coptic Church, was attending Mass inside and was unhurt.
An earlier blast at Saint George’s Coptic Church in Tanta killed twenty-nine people.
A statement by Egypt’s Interior ministry said four police officers, including one policewoman, were among those killed in Alexandria,.
The statement added that the suicide bomber blew himself up after they stopped him from entering the church.
The explosions come weeks before an expected visit by Catholic pontiff, Pope Francis intended to show support for the country’s Christian minority.
Pope Francis has condemned the explosions.
