Gunmen attack Goodluck Jonathan’s house, kill soldier
Gunmen this morning stormed the residence of former President, Goodluck Jonathan in Otuoke, Ogbia Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, in a bid to steal a gunboat belonging to the military stationed at the creek.
The assailants who came in about five engine boats stormed the security post about one hundred metres away from Doctor Jonathan’s residence but met resistance by soldiers who engaged them in a firefight.
A statement by the Media Adviser to Doctor Jonathan, Ikechukwu Eze, confirmed the attack.
He said that the military overpowered the criminals, forcing them to retreat, but one soldier was killed in the fight while another was injured.
Mr Eze said that Doctor Jonathan was not in town when the attack occurred.
He said the former President has condoled with the family of the deceased soldier, the military and has urged the concerned security authorities to swing into action and bring the culprits to book.
The Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Sixteen Brigade, Nigerian Army, Major Jonah Danjuma said he will issue a statement, as soon as he gets more details.
Bayelsa Police Command Spokesman, Asinim Butswat, said he does not want to talk about the military affair.
Meanwhile, Former President Goodluck Jonathan has explained why gunmen attacked his country home in Otuoke.
The former President, who was not in Otuoke at the time of the attack however returned to his village to assess the situation.
Doctor Jonathan condemned the attack and reassured his people that there was no cause for alarm.
