Residents of Ikpoba-Slope and its environs are apprehensive of the likelihood of flooding occasioned by the water hyacinth that is almost closing up the river.
Patience Osarogiuwa reports that the hyacinth has become very visible on the water, which signifies its spread.
It was observed that the Ikpoba River is gradually being covered by the hyacinth; a situation that has sent fear into the mind of the residents around the Ikpoba Hill axis as the free flow of water has been hindered.
Commenting on the situation, some resident who spoke with the news crew said the water hyacinth is almost closing up the river, stressing that whenever it rains, the whole area is usually flooded. They expressed fear that if something is not done before the advent of heavy rains, the entire area could be submerged in flood.
The residents called on the state government to expedite action, by cleaning the river of the hyacinth.
When contacted on the telephone, Edo State Commissioner for Environment and Public Utilities, Prince Clem Agba referred the news crew to the Federal Ministry of Environment whose responsibility it is to handle such cases.
The controller of the Federal Ministry was however said to be away on official engagement when the news crew visited.
