Edo State Governor Mr. Godwin Obaseki has enjoined teachers in the State teaching service to be dedicated to their duties as government is desirous of addressing the challenges facing the teaching profession.
Governor Obaseki made the statement in a message to the ceremony making the celebration of 2017 World Teachers Day organized by the Nigerian Union of teachers, Edo State.

The Nigerian Union of Teachers, Edo State wing 2017 World Teachers Day celebration, with the theme Teaching In Freedom, Empowering Teachers, was opened with a welcome address by the State Chairman Edo state NUT, Comrade Loggle Akhagbemhe who said that for teachers to give their optimal performance, they must be allowed to work in an environment that is devoid of harassment and intimidation.
He enumerated areas in the educational sector in Edo state that are in dire need of attention, including Leave Transport Grants for Primary school teachers, Minimum wage of N25,000 and Subvention to schools amongst others.
While the National President, Nigeria Union of Teachers Comrade Michael Olukoya said teachers, like their counterparts elsewhere in the world deserve to be empowered and be allowed to teach in freedom for the growth and future wellbeing of the nation.
Highpoint of the occasion was the Lecture delivered by Associate Professor and Head Department of Philosophy, AAU, Ekpoma Matthew Izibili.
In his lecture, he said teachers cannot control everything, and expecting them to do so would prevent them from teaching in freedom and becoming empowered. Matthew Izibili also said that teaching is not a profession but a calling and a passion, hence the influx of teachers without passion for the job has become a major canker worm in the teaching industry.
The Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki who was represented by the Edo State Deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu said teachers are at the forefront of this governments restructuring plans in Edo State.
He encouraged teachers to continue to work hard and said that the problems teachers in Edo State face in the smooth running of their professional duties have already been looked at and in solutions will be provided in the nearest future.
Some Teachers present at the occasion express joy at witnessing 2017 world teachers day and advised their professional colleagues to continue diligently in carrying out their duties.
Personalities present at the event include the Deputy Speaker, Edo State House of Assembly, Right Honorable Folly Ogedegbe, the Chief of Staff, Edo State, Comrade Taiwo Akerele, his Deputy, Comrade Kingsley Ehigiamusoe and the Sole Administrator. Edo State Universal Basic Education Board ,Doctor Joan Oviawe amongst others.
