Reactions trail absence of REC in Edo State

The absence of a Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the Edo State office of Independent National Electoral Commission has become an issue of public discourse.

Owie Osazuwa reports that, respondents are calling for immediate appendence of a new Resident Electoral Commissioner to ensure credibility in the cabinet of the forth approaching governorship election.

The respondents, who spoke on the development, say the office of Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) cannot be undermined in an electioneering process.

They described a situation where there is a vacancy in the Edo State office of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) when governorship election is around the corner as unhealthy.

According to the respondents, there is need for urgent appointment of a new REC in the state’s INEC office with a view to planning and subsequently conduct of credible gubernatorial election.

The respondents were also of the views that, plans should be put in place for immediate replacement of REC since the position in tenured to undue vacancy in the office.

The tenure of Resident Electoral Commissioner in Edo State office of INEC, Doctor Rose Oboforibo ended in Marach, 2012.
