Residents In Benin City Observe National HIV Testing Day

Twenty seventh of June every year is National HIV Testing Day.
Adesuwa Lato reports that some residents in Benin City and stakeholders said the day is to sensitize the public on the need to know their status causes and prevention of HIV.

HIV is the virus that can lead to AIDS. Commenting on the signifance of the day, some stakeholders said the National HIV Testing Day helps create awareness on the importance of HIV testing and early diagnosis to enable infected persons commence early treatment.
Some medical practitioners disclosed that HIV can be contracted through unprotected sex with infected partners, use of unsterilized sharp objects used by infected Mothers to child and HIV transmission through unscreened blood transfusion.

Some respondent also commented on the importance of knowing one’s HIV status.
According to statistics made available to newsmen by medical experts over 3.2 million people are living with HIV in Nigeria.
