Robert Mugabe has resigned as President of Zimbabwe.
His resignation is contained in a letter he sent to parliament today which was made public by Speaker Jacob Mudenda.
According to Speaker of the Parliament, Jacob Mudenda, Mr. Mugabe’s decision to resign is voluntary and that he made the decision to allow a smooth transfer of power.
The speaker said plans are underway to ensure that a new leader is announced on Wednesday even as the letter did not announce who will be in charge, It was gathered that the surprise announcement halted an impeachment hearing that had begun against President Mugabe.
The announcement sparked off a frenzy of celebration across Zimbabwe as people trooped the streets of Harare in celebration, The ruling party, ZANU-PF had earlier expelled President Robert Mugabe as leader of the party.
President Robert Mugabe is who is oldest head of state in the world at the age of ninety-three has been inpower since 1980.
Reacting to the development, UK Prime Minister, Theresa May said it is an opportunity to forge ahead and enjoined Zimbabweans to work for the development of the their country.
