Scraping of SIEC: Respondents commend Reps decision

The Unanimous vote by the House of Representative directing that State Independent Electoral Commission be Scrapped has received applause from members of the public.

On Wednesday, a majority of the law makers in the Federal House of Representatives voted to scrap State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIEC) in the on-going Amendment of the 1999 Constitution.

Against this backdrop, a cross session of respondents who have been reacting to the decision described it as a welcome development.

The respondents said the move by the law makers is a victory for democracy, maintaining that the voice of the majority has been upheld by the federal law makers in the House of Representatives.

If the bill enjoys the assent of the executive, independent candidates will also be sanctioned to run for public offices.

Some respondents who spoke with Independent Television News crew commended the decision of the Federal Law makers for their wisdom in taking the stand.
