As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to mark the twenty seventeen International day of the Girl Child, the need to end all forms of discriminations and abuse against the girl child has been stressed.
Aigboje Ikhouria reports that the stakeholders said government at various levels have failed in their responsibilities to the Girl Child.
According to some advocates for the rights of the girl child said the observance of the day supports more opportunity for girls and increases awareness of gender inequality faced by girls all over the globe.
The stakeholders while calling on government at various levels to be sensitive to the plight of the girl child said much still needed to be done to provide equal opportunities to the girl and boy child.
They said the girl child is unsecured in the Nigerian environment as they are been faced with several challenges such as rape, bad health condition, poor education, trafficking of the girl child amongst others.
The stakeholders also advised the girl child not to see herself as a second class citizen but to be the best in their chosen career.
To these students, the international day of the Girl Child is not just for celebration but reminder of mother hood in future.
The theme of the 2017 international day of the Girl Child is “the power of the adolescent girl vision for 2030.
