The poor sanitary condition at the state government-owned abattoir on Ikpoba Slope, Benin City has prompted stakeholders to call on relevant authorities to address the situation in view of its health implications.
Pius Nsogho, who visited the abattoir, reports that the sanitary situation is a sorry sight.
The government owned abattior in Benin City, which is one of the oldest in the state is begging for attention in terms of sanitation. The environmental condition of the area, which is supposed to be above board, on account of the fact that it provides meat and protein need of thousands of consumers, has nothing to write home about.
Officials at the abattoir and customers, who spoke with the news crew expressed concern that, the local authorities which collects revenue on monthly basis have not rendered and assistance to the abattoir as regards improving the sanitary condition of the abattoir.
Effort to reach the Chairman, Ikpoba Okha Local Government Council was unsuccessful.
The health and well being of consumers and that of those who do business in the area is of paramount importance, hence the call for stakeholders to join hands and ensure the cleanliness of the abattoir.
