Mr Ernest Obia, Director, National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR), said on Friday that travelling could inspire cultural awareness, tolerance, and commitment to environmental responsibility for development.
He stated this in an interview with the Newsmen in Abuja, that “Travel can be many more than simply visiting places, taking pictures and buying souvenirs.”
He said that a traveller has the power to help transform the way the world travels.
According to him by exploring alternative travel choices, you can have a unique trip and avoid leaving negative marks on cultures, economies, and the environment, while making a positive impact on the people and places you visit.
He said that eco-tourism was a responsible travel to natural areas which covers the environment and improves welfare of the local people.
He also said that it was that particular walk to a place that somehow has benefit to environment and the people who live there.
“A rafting trip is only eco-tourism if it raises awareness and funds to help protect the watershed,” he said.
The director said that the journey to becoming an eco-tourist started with awareness as a vital part of the global tourism industry.
