African Ministers of Women Affairs have been urged to strengthen communication between them by sharing best practices and achievements of ECOWAS members on women and girls rights issues.
The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Zainab Maina made the call at a meeting of ECOWAS Ministers of Women Affairs in New York.
She urged them to compare various approaches streamlined to protect, respect, promote and remedy the rights of women and girls.
In the meeting initiated by Nigeria and chaired by Hajiya Zainab, she highlighted major problems and challenges associated with the elimination of violence against women and girls as well as identifying concrete and specific actionable programmes that could be implemented by states toward the elimination of violence against women and girls.
The Minister also identified sub-regional and national frameworks to implement decisions reached at Commission on the Status of Women and other agreed recommendations of the UN system.
She said it is important that the ministers exert their influence and goodwill both at the level of ECOWAS and AU to ensure that agreed conclusions are adopted during the Commission on the Status of Women fifty-seven.
